Week One- Reflection

Both of these articles were very interesting, but quite different as well. It seems that they both hover in the middle in terms of opinions of technology.

I noticed that the Joseph & Reigeluth article outlined usage of technology in schools and seemed to support this notion. However, they feel that we may need to be more effective in our usage. Rather than showing students what to do on technology, provide them with ownership of their own knowledge and ability to learn and discover using technology.

The Postman article hovered in the middle, but more towards the fact that we are ineffective with technology because we are overloaded. He feels that technology can be a support, but is indifferent. He thinks that if technology is going to be used, we need to use it as a support system and be effective with our instruction.

I feel that I align more with the Joseph & Reigeluth article. I am a large supporter of technology, but we do need to watch how we are using it to support our instruction. In the article it mentioned handing over control to guide your students rather than holding the reins so tightly (12). I think that is something that is so difficult, but I have been trying a lot in my room. When students have ownership of their own learning, it has more value to them and is more interesting. They will invest their time and knowledge in their education with their teacher as a cheerleader. With all of the new technology, districts are going a bit overboard: jumping in too deep with many different technologies. I think that we could take our time to find technologies that support our students and invest in ensuring their effectiveness.
